Current "Автоматическая загрузка блокчейна" doesn't represent exact difference with blockchain network sync. It reads as "auto blockchain download" and looks like some main way to download blockchain. Using term as "import from a file" or "import" could differ exact process better.

@v1docq47 I don't follow. The string we're discussing is related to the website, not the wallet. We're on 'monero-site' repo, and on the right you can see context widget that says downloads->blockchain. You can compare original string with english version of that site page, and here on the site the context is about blockchain.raw file.

Are you absolutely sure that this exact string we're translating is not about blockchain raw file? If it's about a raw blockchain file (both monero and bitcoin has such mechanism), then "Import a file" meaning would be more suitable than current "Blockchain auto download".

You can see that it's context is about imporing a blockchain.raw as a method to bootstrap a node without using network sync with other nodes.

The problem is: current translation implies some kind of "automatic network download", which is not representing a local file bootstrap mechanism and the way it works.

Two reasons why I decided to comment this in the first place:

1) Lack of straight translation of "bootstrap" term in russian. I don't know any single word that massively being used for translation of this term. "Инициализация блокчейна" (blockchain initialization)? Hard to read and looks strange. That means some alternative wording would be expected. Considering this mechanism is about importing from a local blockchain file, I assumed that mentioning 'import blockchain from a file' could be acceptable and more understandable by an average reader.

2) Current translation could be read as "download blockchain automatically" or "automatic blockchain download", which implies:

a) some main way to download blockchain, while it's not - it's an alternative bootstrap mechanism, not some main way to do that, and while it's currently a first straight mentioning of some sort of 'blockchain download' on that page, it could mislead user to see that as some main way to connect, and not some alternative that's being used only in limited cases; b) connecting to other nodes and download in automatic manner (?)

I see no problem in "Download blockchain" term and block text about importing a local file. The problem I see is: nor current translation nor suggestion by @v1docq47 doesn't represent that meaning.

If an average user hear something about "blockchain" term and visit monero's sites for the first time, he could consider "Automatic blockchain download" as some main way to sync, while this block is about local file bootstrap, not a main way to "download" blockchain.

And suggestion by @v1docq47 implies 'remote boostrap node' instead of local blockchain.raw file.

I understand the confusion. We use "Bootstrap" in 2 different contexts: "Bootstrap node". Which is a node that is used to contact the network while we download the blockchain locally and "blockchain bootstrap", like in this scenario.

The problem is the term bootstrap, which a is quite generic word that basically means "automatically pull from somewhere else". The two contexts above are quite different from each other, and i agree with @landergate that something like "automatic blockchain download" doesn't reflect the meaning of this string (but would be correct if we were talking in the context of a "bootstrap node"). I agree something like "import" would be more accurate.

The problem is the use of "bootstrap" in two different contexts. It's probably not a problem for native technical-savy speakers, but i agree it's unclear for non-native speakers and hard to translate in other languages. i will propose to change that header in something less confusing.

I opened PR !1229, which proposes to replace "Blockchain Bootstrap" with "Import Blockchain". This will hopefully help other translators as well. Thank you all for discussing the issue.
